THE BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG

The Breed Standard

This breed being a member of the working group is one of the most beautiful of Swiss dogs used by the Weaver's of Berne as a draught dog and also is employed in the herding of sheep and cattle. The name is taken from the canton of Berne. The dog is strong and sturdy and is active, alert, well-boned and of striking colour. He is a kind and devoted family dog, slow to mature, self-confident, good natured, friendly and fearless. The breed should never be aggressive. He is a gentleman, kind and curteous, well mannered and affectionate. He is not a noisy dog and he is obedient and easily trained. He makes a perfect companion for children and a devoted family pet.

Size: Height Dogs - 25 to 17.5 inches
Bitches - 23 to 26inches.

Colour: Jet black with rich reddish brown on cheeks, over eyes, on all four legs and on chest. Slight to medium sized symmetrical white head markings [blaze] and white chest marking [cross] are essential.
