THE CHOW CHOW

The Breed Standard

A member of the Utility Group, this dog was thought to have its origins in China where it was used as a guard dog and also for hunting. He came to England sometime during the late 18th century.

The Chow cannot be mistaken for any other breed, this being due to his stiff, stilted movement and his bluish-black tongue. This breed is aloof and stand-offish but extremely loyal to his owner. He also tends to be a one-man dog. The dog is not noisy but when aroused he is well able to defend his home and owner.

The Rough Chow has a coat that is abundant, thick and one that stands off from the body. Five minutes of daily grooming is needed to keep the coat in good condition. The Smooth Chow has a woolly undercoat with a short top coat of plush texture.

This breed was not really noticed in Britain until the 1920’s with a number being shown at Crufts in 1925.
The height of the male at the shoulder is 48-56 cm (19-22 in); bitches 46-51cm (18-20 in)
