THE ROUGH COLLIE

The Breed Standard

The Rough Collie is the same as the Smooth Collie with the exception of coat length. It is the somewhat refined version of the original working collie from which it has been selected over at least a hundred years. As a result a glamorous show dog is seen which draws applause because of his pleasing appearance in the same way that the working cousin thrills audiences with skill in the competitive obedience ring. Even many of the show dogs can perform satisfactorily given the chance and owners should remember the origin of their collie when taking them walks in the fields and hillsides. For all of the collies beauty we must never forget that the breed is a working dog and must not be considered to be just a pretty face.

It is important to groom your collie on a regular basis as this can be very rewarding. Surprisingly Rough Collies do not need large amounts of exercise but he must not be allowed to put on too much weight.
