THE SHETLAND SHEEPDOG
| The Breed Standard |
This is a member of the Pastoral Group and originated in the Shetland Islands off the North East coast of Scotland. A Shetlander called Loggie, standardised the breed for the showring and it was first entered at Crufts in 1906 being shown there as a miniature collie. The “Sheltie” is an active, intelligent and glamorous dog who always wants to be on the goand is almost tireless. He is affectionate with his owner but reserved with strangers. He is a sturdy, cheerful, little dog with soft undercoat and a harsh outer coat that makes him well able to withstand the harsh winter weather. He is alert and easy to train and makes a good house pet. The
ideal height for a male at the withers is 37cm (14.5in), for a bitch,
36cm (14in), More than 2.5cm (1in) above or below these heights highly
