THE LABRADOR RETRIEVER
| The Breed Standard |
The Labrador is not a very old breed its Breed Club being formed in 1916 and the Yellow Labrador Club being formed in 1925. The breed first made its name in field trialling being originally introduced to Britain by Col Peter Hawker and the Earl of Malmesbury in the late 1800’s. The Labrador is one of the best all round dogs in the world. It is not only used in retrieving game but has also made his mark in the world of guide dogs for the blind, as s sniffer dog for the detection of drugs and arms. Popular opinion stated that the breed originated on the coast of Greenland where fishermen used a similar type of dog to retrieve fish. He makes an excellent water dog his weather resistant coat and unique tail are likened to that of an otter because of its shape. He is a real gentleman, adores children, has a kind and loving nature, and a confident air. Large cities are not really his scene, being a bit of a country squire at heart, he is really at home in the country.
